Where are you currently working?
I have just finished working at a salon for 5 years so I’m currently a full-time freelancer ready to travel the world.

Can you please tell us your best hair tips or insider secrets?

Go back to basics by using the right tools to style your hair. Invest in a salon quality hairdryer setting you back around $130. They are powerful so it will smooth those frizzy bits away and dry your hair faster. Team it up with a large ceramic round brush to help control the hair while blow drying and you are all set.

What hair style is currently the most popular?

The mid length cut. It’s #1 for versatility and for when you want to start having some fun, no strings attached.

Start playing with volume and texture by adding some layers.
Include a long blunt fringe when you want to mean business.
Girl-it-up by using a medium to large hot tong for a natural wave.
These are only some of the options you will have with this style. Lastly, get your colourist on board and have a consultation about where you are going. It’s spring now and time for a change!

What has been your favourite job so far?

My favourite job so far would be my photographic shoot for Canvas magazine. It features an amazing team of professionals who really worked hard to create something which I think is beautiful, dramatic and fashion forward.

Do you prefer to be given direction on how the client would like their hair styled or do you prefer to let your creative mind go and make up a hair style/colour etc?

I like a mix of both. Ultimately you need to asses the client and their needs. Beginning with a thorough consultation is the foundation of a trusting relationship that you can have with your client. From here I take them on a journey where in each salon visit we discuss new ideas, change, or perfecting a style. I like my clients to feel like we are a team.

Do you truly believe women need to splurge on expensive hair products, or are the cheaper versions a similar alternative?

If the product you are using at the moment gives you the result you are after then stick with it! A client may need something quite specific and usually we can help them by suggesting a salon quality product that we know works and that we use everyday.

Anything else you would like to add?

Find a hairdresser that you can trust. It usually works well when you go by a friend’s recommendation. If jumping in the deep end doesn’t sound appealing then book for a consultation -most hairdressers offer this complementary. This will give you an idea if the hairdresser is on the same track as you.

Don’t be shy, we are here to help!

VIC Make up artist and Hair stylist - Zoe Karlis

Zoe Karlis is a Melbourne based professional make-up artist & hair stylist specialising in catwalk, editorial, advertising, bridal, TV & film. She has worked in London fashion week and has also worked with current Miss Universe Australia, the gorgeous Jesinta Campbell. Here she talks to Ones 2 Watch about her career and the make up industry.

At what point in your life did you realise you wanted to be a make-up artist and why?

For as long as I remember! I grew up in my mothers hair salon so I was always part of the industry. I would sit there for ages just playing with all her makeup and creating textures. Then in my teens, i was always the one doing my friends makeup and would create different looks for them all. Not only do i love making people feel beautiful and special I love the creativity it brings with it. I have always been so passionate about makeup and its amazing being able to do it for a living!

What steps have you taken to break into the industry?

EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING! The official course I undertook was over 13 years ago. It was great and taught me the fundamentals of makeup and applying it. Over the years I continued to do makeup part time. This enabled me to build upon my experience and work on all the different types of faces out there. I then decided to move to London where I worked in the industry full time. I did a short course at the Academy Of Freelance Makeup and met the most amazing teachers and mentors. It was the best thing I ever did. I was able to work with some of the greatest makeup artists and they taught me the most valuable tricks. My network and contacts grew from there and its been full steam ahead ever since.

What are the obstacles and challenges that you have faced in your field since you began?

It is a very competitive and difficult industry to break into. You will get knocked back a million times but I have realised the ones who succeed are the ones who never give up no matter what. Unfortunately the industry here is not like the UK as there is not as much going on. This is where your attitude and complete professionalism is important. Especially when starting out you will be expected to work or free - its just the way it is! When building your folio and trying to get the best shots possible for everyone its imperative that you focus all your time and energy to it.

What has been the best job you have worked on so far, and what would be your ideal job?

Without a doubt, London Fashion Week. Backstage is unreal and the energy that everyone brings to it is outstanding. It was non stop and i loved how creative you get to be. My ideal job would be a Chanel show or campaign in Paris........watch this space!

VIC Designer - Joseph Jang

Joseph Jang is an aspiring fashion designer, residing in Melbourne, who hopes to "become an artistic director in a French Haute Couture house" however his "ultimate dream would be to establish a luxury brand and change the way people view fashion like Coco Chanel did".

Check out the Ones 2 Watch interview with Joseph alongside some of his amazing images!

When did you first decide to get into fashion design?

I started appreciating fashion when I was in year 9 after seeing British designer John Galliano's amazing collections, but I think my love for fashion started at a very young age. I saw Disney's 'The little mermaid' when I was about 4 and I fell in love with the dresses and princesses and started designing dresses for all the Disney princesses. My mother was also a big influence. She is very fashionable woman with passion for beautiful and unique designs. One day when I was in pre-school, my teacher told me that if I wanted to become an artist, I needed to be able to draw landscapes as well, which I hated. When I went home, I asked my mother what I should become when I grow up because I didn't want to draw landscapes and she said, 'how about a fashion designer?'.

When designing your clothing do you try to follow common trends that are current in the industry or do you try to generate your own?

For me trend is common aspects in many different designers collection that Magazines, media and general public agree on after seeing the collections, not something that any designers should think about before they create their collection. Many fashion students do not realise this and become slaves to the trends. Because the fashion industry is evolving at a exponential rate, by the time a designer finishes his/her collection according to a trend, the chances are that the trend is already outdated and it is usually impossible to voluntarily predict future trend. We should always be aware of the flow but never a trend and that's how I approach designing. I stay true to my inspiration and do what I do and few months later, I can usually see that other designers also used a lot of floral print, leather or whatever. I seem to have my own vocabulary when it comes to my aesthetic.

What inspires you when designing a new collection?

It's hard to pinpoint where my inspirations comes from because they come from a lot of different things and it is usually combination of many different influences, it could be a song, movie, theatre production, history and just about anything. So I try my best to be always open to anything and everything our wonderful culture and the world has to offer. I soak everything up like a sponge and than it gets all mixed up in my sub-conscience and suddenly, voila! there is a design on my paper.

Who would you most love to dress and why?

I would absolutely love to dress Joan of Arc, Elizabeth I, Marie Antoinette, Mata Hari because they were the women who redefined not only the fashion but the image of women. They were revolutionaries in many aspects and that attracts me. More realistically, I would love to dress Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway. Not only are they beautiful outside, they also have great passion, love, and repect for their arts which is backed up by their amazing talent and they seem to not forget their place in the world.

What words of advice would you give to people wanting to get into fashion design?

I would say that you really need to know why you want to be a fashion designer. There are surprisingly large number of people who wants to become a fashion designer and expect fashion to be this glamorous world with fame, celebrity and money. There are aspects of all that in fashion but that should never be the reason. You really need to love fashion. You have to be able to say that I would be happy sewing for 18 hours a day in the garage of my parents' house with only baked beans to eat for weeks as I would be living in a multi-million dollar Beverly Hills mansion designing for celebrity clients in a state-of-the-art, high tech studio. Love fashion for what it is, don't feel insecure because some might think of it just as dress making or don't become an elitist because some consider fashion as an art. Fashion is fashion, nothing more, nothing less.

Also Fashion is one of those excitingly unpredictable industry where there is no written rule to success so I hope no one feels that they need to draw in a certain way, design in a certain way and be in a certain way.

NSW Model - Tayler Ball

Tayler Ball is a 20 year old Sydney model, she stands at 5'7", although in the modelling world that is considered short, Ones 2 watch think Tayler could be the face of a huge beauty campaign such as Loreal or Maybelline.

Here is the Ones 2 Watch interview with Tayler. Enjoy :)

You have a very striking look, what is your heritage?
I'm sort of a mutt actually ;) I'm German, Italian, English, Irish, and Indian!

Why did you decide to get into modelling?
I was approached at a fashion show that I went to by a lovely photographer who told me that I should give it a try!

What has been your favourite job and why?
My favorite job was modeling in Guadalajara, Mexico for the C-Klass catalogue with Francisco De Luna. It was my favorite because I really loved all of the people I worked with. Everybody was so humble and sweet and they each took their time on the little things which I really loved and appreciated. Also didn't hurt that the clothes were super cute.
Also, can't forget my favorite photographer Joel Contreras! He gets better and better every shoot and has become a great friend of mine. I ALWAYS enjoy working with him!!

What are some pros and cons of being in the modelling industry?
Pros- Being able to be somebody other than myself for a little bit. Stepping out of my little box, I guess! Also, the people that I've met along the way have really made this fun for me!
Cons- Trying to keep up with the "norms" of modeling. For example, Being stick thin, being really tall, etc. I am neither so it's been sort of tough, but I have learned to accept and embrace myself for who I am and what I look like!

Do you have any health and beauty secrets that you swear by?
Amazing Cosmetics concealor is wonderful. I will hopefully never have to pick another brand! As far as health goes, I love fruit! Apples are probably my favorite. ALSO- Every night before bed I drink a glass of warm skim milk mixed with honey. Puts me to bed like a baby!

Anything else you would like to add?
Such a great industry, but it's not all about being serious. It's about having FUN and creating beautiful images! Good luck to all of the aspiring models out there. :)

VIC Model Lulu Wagstaffe

Ones 2 watch is loving this 21 year old fresh faced beauty from Melbourne, Lulu Wagstaffe. Lulu is signed with Viviens and has walked in David Jones and Myer parades, RAFW, LMFF, Auckland Fashion Week, Milan Women's Fashion Week, Gucci Australia show and Chanel Australia show.

She has also appeared in a national Bardot campaign, and worked with many other well known Australian brands inclusing Jeans West, Target and Sportsgirl.
You may have also seen her face gracing the pages of some of Australia's biggest fashion magazines, such as Russh, Cream, Marie Claire, Attitude, Fashion Trend, Yen, Grazia and Harper's Bazaar.

A huge thank you to Lulu for answering the following questions for ones 2 watch.

How did you first get into modelling?
When I was 15 years old I was scouted by a Sydney agency in my hometown of Adelaide, and asked to come up and do Mercedes Australian Fashion Week in Sydney in 2004. I had a good start as a newbie at that fashion week and I walked in 10 shows.

You have worked with some amazing talent like Jez Smith, Nicole Bentley, Christian Blanchard, what is it like working with these well known photographers in the industry?
It's fantastic and I feel lucky. I have a lot of respect for their work and I find that shooting with experienced professionals makes the job easier and more fluid.

What has been your favourite job and why?
Well, I have a couple of personal favourite moments:
Walking out on the catwalk for the first time at Milan women's fashion week. Seeing myself on the side of a bus in my first clothing campaign. Doing the Nintendo DS TV Commercial was really fun. I also felt pretty proud when I was 15 and I appeared in two editorial shoots in the first issue of Russh Magazine, because that went on to become one of the biggest Australian fashion mags.

Have you worked alongside any well known models that you admire and have you ever found yourself starstruck ?
It's definitely interesting to meet a variety of people in the industry. I never really 'admired' models while I was younger, mostly because I didn't think about modelling or the fact that I might do this one day when I was older. I couldn't give you a full list of models but a few names off the top of my head are Miranda Kerr, Megan Gale, Abbey Lee Kershaw.

Where has modelling taken you?
I have been lucky enough to travel and work in Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo, Auckland and Milan.

How do you stay fit and healthy?
I have always had a fast metabolism, it runs in my family. My brother is 6'5" and very slender. I have been a vegetarian for about 4 years for moral and environmental reasons, plus you get the benefits of healthy eating. I'm not a sporty person but I do have a wonderful personal trainer called Byron at Immortal Fitness in Melbourne.

What advice would you give to aspiring models?
I'd recommend getting started around the age of 17, don't rush into it, and go to a reputable agency. This is not an easy job, but it can be very rewarding. You will need a thick skin and healthy self-image to survive in this business.

We think Lulu will make her mark in the fashion industry, definitely watch this one!

VIC Designer - Milly Pilly designs

Ones 2 watch discovered Milly Pilly designs on the internet and we fell in love with their cute accessories and head pieces and we especially love their cute photos! Milly Pilly is a small business creating one off and small runs of hand made
millinery, facinators, clips and accessories. Made out of satin, ribbons, bows, feathers, vintage fabrics and Latex!

A big thank you to Jazz the designer of Milly Pilly for answering a few questions for us.

How long have you been creating hand made millinery, fascinators, clips and accessories for, and did you undertake any study to teach you how to make headwear?
I have been creating things for my whole life and have always loved doing things with my hands. Milly Pilly Designs was born at the end of 2009, when i started to really get into making hair accessories and fascinators. When I realized how much I loved creating these things I enrolled in a Millinery Course. I'm still currently studying and I love it so much!

How did you get into designing head pieces?
I got into Designing head pieces quite naturally, I am a hairdresser by trade and due to certain circumstances am unable to do hairdressing any more, so Millinery sort of works in great still taking headforms and shapes into consideration. I have always loved hats and theatrical dress styles and certain pop stars like Boy George have inspired me. I love the glamorous aspect to them, it's an occasion when you step out in a hat or fascinator!

How do you come up with your ideas for your pieces and how long does it take to make these pieces?
My ideas are crazy I just have so many I can't stop them! I'm generally inspired by the things around me, fabrics, feathers, everyday things. I then just put them into a little book to save for later. I really don't have time to make all the things I would love to! The time for each piece varies, I do an accessories range of bows and necklaces and easy to wear items and of course they don't take as long as the hats and fascinators I make. All the hats are hand blocked and hand sewn, which can be quite time consuming but I love the process and the satisfaction of the pretty things you can create from scratch by hand.

What is your ultimate goal that you want to achieve with Milly pilly designs?
My ultimate goal for Milly Pilly is to have a creative sucessful business which I enjoy. Also for my clients to be happy and feel great when they step out in Milly Pilly Designs.

NSW Designer Jessica Green

Jess Green is a young designer who has just started her label, Age of Intimacy.
The photos shown in this post are of her first collection "Away with the faeries". Even though she only graduated from her design course at the beginning of this year, I believe Jess is already creating some amazing garments and is definitely one to watch.

I was lucky enough to ask Jess some questions about herself and her label, so here they are.

Tell me some random facts about yourself:

Umm random facts about me???
I grew up in a small town in N.S.W called Broken Hill, The colours around Broken hill and its history still inspire me. I love Shoes and Chocolate. I studied at the Whitehouse Institute of design in Sydney. and Graduated at the beginning of the year.

I was a Finalist in 2009 Triumph Inspiration Awards, I think that's what drew me towards Lingerie.

Where do you draw your inspiration from for your designs?

I'm always gathering and collecting images, stories, garments, thoughts and colours. And I always carry a little visual diary with me when I go any where,
so I can take notes or draw anything that I like. I guess I'm a bit like a bower bird. I also love looking at history and modern cultures.

What shop would you most love to see your collection in?
I would just love for it to be sold world wide.

Who is your favorite designer?
I can't pick one, so here are my favorite top 5 designers
agent provocateur, jean paul gaultier, Vivienne westwood, john galliano and Romance was born.
They all tell a story and create something new.

What is your personal style like?
My style is a bit vintage, a bit old world glam, meets sex and the city.

When you create your designs what is going through your mind?
I’m always thinking about the story that i want to tell. That helps me think about what the character would be like. For example, what she would wear, what music she would listen to, where she would go, and I will bring everything together to create wonderful and unusual pieces that tell the story.

I would like to thank Jess very much for taking her time to do this interview, and
to check out Jess's label "Age of Intimacy" go to
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Age-of-Intimacy/105476112836455?ref=ts&v=wall
I'm sure this label will be coming to stores near you very soon.

SA Body Painter - Emma Hack

Emma hack has been painting bodies for the past 21 years. She has won 1st prize at the CIDESCO World Congress Professional World Body Painting Championship in Hong Kong. Her amazing works have been exhibited at over 30 events including the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Art Sydney 2008 and a textile design fair in Paris 2009.

The images I have shown in this post are from her wallpaper series, which are my favourite from her work, however she does have some other amazing work including the evolution collection which involves some australian animals being painted into wallpaper, so please go to www.emmahackartist.com to check out more of her amazing work!

Here is a part of an interview with Emma Hack from thevine.com.au:

As an artist - your primary thing is painting on bodies. Why is the body a good canvas?

I started my art career painting on bodies. As a children's face painter and make-up artist, is seemed like an easy transition for me to include the entire surface of the body in my creations. I really love the illusions that can be created on the human form. My first creations were painting clothing onto the body to appear as if the model was wearing them and the illusion has evolved from there.

In 2008 I started photographing my own works, now I feel this is complimentary to my body art as well as conceptualising the whole vision of the finished image.

How did you move from being a make-up artist to this?

In 1999 I created a calendar and my first exhibition of pinup style models, this was a huge dream for me. In 2002 I created my first 'art' based collection named Petal in which I contorted the human form to created flower shapes and then blended the remaining form into the black background.

I love exhibiting and creating my own work. As a make-up artist working in the advertising world, you are mostly always following a brief. I guess my exhibited work has a loose feel to the finished product and art allows for that. I am also really enjoying the photography as well and creating what I want to see in my mind.

What is the funniest thing that has happened in the creation of your works? I mean, some funny things must happen when people get their kit off and you get to work...

My latest collection, 'Panoramic Bodies' was created on site with all the acrobats pitching in helping painting each other, not the normal thing for tourists to find when finding us along their path!

Fainting is a big thing, about 20 per cent of the models I use faint. Standing still can be quite hard on the body and when creating the wallpapers the models need to stand in position the whole time which can be exhausting.
